More Support For San Mateo Poker Meetup Group

It seems that people have finally started posting coverage that isn't a complete rip-off of the press release. Check out this article from The Examiner.

Stephen found this thread in the 2+2 forums. Obviously, there is a ton of support there. Check out his blog, by the way. It's good stuff.

My roommate told me last night that we made it onto Reason.com here. Wow.

We can't forget Ken's Blog, either :) It seems he found this post. Yoink!

If you see anything else, please post a link in the comments. Thanks!

    • Good advice. Thanks for sharing your experience too. Any chance you can give us the Cliff's Notes version of how your case turned out?

    • (I'm the same person who posted on your other blogs just now.)

Collecting $5 from buyins or the prize pool of a tourney for the end of season tourney is not legal.... fyi. This can be considered a "rake" per California State law. As someone who was busted myself in a home game close to 3 years ago, to keep your home games safe (or safer), you don't want to take ANY money out of buyins or the prize pool for anything. Doesn't matter if one has receipts for refreshments or not... state law says nothing about "it's okay if you have receipts."

Best way to handle refreshment costs is to have a tip jar, or people pay for cokes/pepsis when they get one from the fridge. And skip the end of season tourney. Or just make that a separate buyin like your normal tourneys. Good luck.

    • You'll be fine if you don't draw attention to your group (be courteous to neighbors, etc.). Also, make sure to keep track of the money you collect for your freeroll so you can show that it all got paid back and you didn't keep any.

    • I think that is very unfortuniate about what happend. That wouldn't happen to my group right? Because everyone knows where the extra 5 dollars is going to that end of season tournament. That means I won't really ask for extra money to a group fund to purchase a table, better cards more chairs etc. Well I hope your able to play more in the area besides having to go to a casino we will talk tonight about this matter.

    • Great article by Tamara Barak Aparton. Props for talking to people outside the police department and getting the straight story.
