WSOP Event 49 Blog Series - Day One

We are waiting to be seated. I'm finally starting to feel actually nervous. Wheeeeee! Look for an update on the break in about 2 hours.

    Update: (Via Ethan)

    • Got 2 great hands so far:
      1. , followed by another on the flop for trips!
      2. Flopped Broadway with
    • I've got about 8800 in chips
    • I've been rivered on 2 big pots so far
    • The chip leader is on my left, he's the best at the table, and he's the guy who rivered me, both times
    • My table image is a carefully-cultivated loose/aggressive, which I'm using to my advantage
    • I've ended the aspirations of 2 players so far

    Update 2: (Via Ethan)
    Up to 11,500!

update: via my phone at dinner break (after 6 rounds)
Turn for the worse. I had to show some suspect/drawing cards (but won one hand). That was good but then my image was loose/aggressive and ppl refused to fold after that. One misplay resulted in a 4k loss then the blinds went up and ate more of my money. I'm at 8k, but the blinds are gonna be 300/600 with 75 antes. I'm in the cutoff at the start so I might be done soon :/ btw, I took out mr cubs. Oh yeah, 590 ppl left of 2700 and 270 pays.

    final update: (2:23am)
Adrian and I are both in the dollars! There are 215 players left. I'm going to research the payout structure tomorrow morning (tired now), but the real money starts with 50 left (something like $8k).

I have 49,500 in chips, which is above the average chip stack of about $38000. The blinds are going to be 800/1600 with 200 antes (playing 9-handed) so that makes for 4200 in the pot before cards are dealt. That puts me at 49500/4200 Harrington Ms, which is just under 12. Thankfully I brought the red book and will skim the chapter on the yellow-to-red zone over breakfast with Adrian ;)

Thanks for all the support. This has been crazy. It was really fun when it was the bubble. We played one hand at a time and everybody was running to the rail in between hands to talk to their friends and wait out the last players. When it finally happened, the mood was so good. Everybody was just happy to be there and really friendly. This has been a great experience :) Special thanks to Adrian for making me do this!

Sorry, Ethan, I broke the no-Coke rule. I had 2 cups of Pepsi for dinner (gasp, Pepsi), but I needed to wake up.

All right, that's it. Sleep time. I am so psyched!!! Thanks again for the comments and well-wishes and finger crossing :D

    • Hey Art, thanks for the comments :) It was nice playing with you. In fact, everybody has been very friendly thus far. Yeah, that raise play against seat 1 on the board was ridiculously terrible, no doubt about that. I had pocket tens and I guess I wanted to convince myself that his bet was due to my loose/aggressive image and he was just trying to take it away from me. I really appreciate the advice, though. I will definitely take it into account for today. I still have a lot to learn...

    • I meant loose/aggressive, not tight/aggressive on my prior post in the second sentence.......

    • anonymous
    • I played with Jason for a few hours yesterday. He was easily viewed as tight/aggressive. I was moved to his table in Round 3 or 4 and was taken out during round 7 with my QQ vs. A-10 ( by the chip leader at the table). I thought Jason was doing a pretty good job, but he did get into some obvious situations he should have avoided (like re-raising someone that wouldn't back down because they REALLY had a hand). I knew he was "stealing" my blinds a few times (I was four seats to his left), but I was not going to defend 8-3 or 4-2, etc. If I ever picked up a hand in the blind, I was planning on making life very difficult for Jason. Fortunately for him that never happened. I am glad to see he made it to the money. My one suggestion would be to tighten up your play and don't try to steal the blinds so much. Quality cards are important when you are in the money. If someone is betting hard at you, it probably means they really have the goods. Best of luck!

    • OOps! The last comment was mine. I wasn't logged in.

      Go Jason & Adrian!

    • Wow! I am really psyched about this now. I just wish Card Player or the WSOP websites comment on you or your chip stacks at least.

      Go get 'em!

    • I am a super luck-sack, no question about that. I've been all in behind 3 times (QJs vs AKo, Q9s vs. A8s, and KK vs AA). I hope I've played pretty well, but I'm not overly proud. Thanks again for the support.

    • Holy shit man u cashed I am very proud of you congrads what is your chip count that is sick man I wish the best for you.

    • Oh my gosh this is so exciting! I wish we could all be there to watch! By the way... does he get to sleep ever? :)

    • He's in the money!

    • 1 player left to the money he says

    • I've never met Jason, only know of him through Nick, but I'm completely stoked for him! Congrats!

    • avatar for uzjedi
    • 58K and still rockin

    • avatar for uzjedi
    • now at 40k. blinds and antes about to be big enough that he'll have 10-15 revolutions

    • avatar for Megan
    • Jason currently has 40K in chips and a short time ago was in the top ten in chips :). Yay!! Good job Jason!!!

    • avatar for Graham
    • ... and by that I mean, now he can relax and play real poker again instead of needing a double-up =)

    • anonymous
    • sack

    • avatar for Graham
    • HAHA!!! Woo-day! Get that money...

    • avatar for uzjedi
    • UPDATE: Jason was very short on chips after dinner break and was ready to start shoving for his life ...but... he doubled up, cracked Aces, made a good call on some short all in, doubled up with KK vs AA (hit a straight), and is now at 50k in chips!! I made sure to call him a luck sack. ;) GO JASON!

    • anonymous
    • Woo hoo!!! Go Jason. We want our dinner next Wednesday night. :)

    • anonymous
    • Man I hope you hold on and get into the top 300 where anything can happen just play like you know how to.

    • avatar for Jason M
    • you guys are weird. Let's hope I can double up or steal the blinds :)

    • anonymous
    • hey keep your hopes up we all believe in you!!!
      it's hammer time

    • anonymous
    • You can do it paco

    • anonymous
    • Thanks for the link. I don't understand the ratings. Chip counts vs. change. There's a lot of zero's and Jason isn't listed. Sorry, I must sound really dumb. Did you know that I once beat Jason at this game? Yeah, I know...only once.

    • anonymous
    • So, the real question is...is Jay the 2nd highest chip count at the table?

    • avatar for Graham
    • Do we know who the guy is or just that he's got Jason's number? Plenty of other people at the table...

    • avatar for uzjedi
    • Rounds are timed. I think they are an hour. I've no idea how many chips the big stack has, but if he is the chip leader then it is probably multiple times that of Jason's stack.

    • avatar for Megan
    • P.S. I don't remember how much the "guy to the left" has in chips...Stephen?

    • avatar for Megan
    • I should clarify my "giving him grief" comment. I didn't mean that he had said anything to Jason but that the guy is good and Jason has been getting in to a few hands with him .

    • anonymous
    • How many games are in a round? or is it timed? How many chips does the "guy to the left" have?
      Go Jason Go!!!

    • avatar for uzjedi
    • At the end of the 4th round Jason has 11.5k in chips.
Blinds will be 150/300 with 25 ante in next round.
      GL Jason. ;)

    • avatar for FREMONTkyle
    • thats funny the guy gets lucky on him but then gives him grief

    • avatar for Megan
    • I just talked to Jason. He says he's feeling pretty good and has been making a lot of good plays. He has about 11,000 in chips now, but is still getting a little grief from the player to his left (mentioned above). Hopefully since the guy is a Cub fan the White Sox win will shake him up a bit :). GO SOX!!

Good luck and keep up the good work Jason!

    • ahhhhhhhhh

    • anonymous
    • Thanks Ethan! That sure helps. How many chips did the players start with?
      Good luck, Jay!!

    • avatar for FREMONTkyle
    • good job so your already at where you want to be as far as chip count to end the day so in those 2 big hands are those also the hands that u got your chips with?
KEEP IT UP AND ILL BE BOOKING MY FLIGHT

BUT DINNER IS ON YOU lol

    • avatar for Ethan
    • I think I can help out:

      • The flop is the first 3 cards to come out, after your cards have been dealt and a round of betting
      • Broadway is a 10 J Q K A straight - the best possible
      • The "river" is the last community card dealt. Being rivered means that you are favored to win the hand until the river comes out, completing your opponent's hand and causing you to lose.
    • anonymous
    • Can you explain in "real" words for us non-poker players"
