2008 WSOP Main Event Final Table

    • Turns out the cool technology I was going to use doesn't quite match up to this problem as well as I was hoping. Maybe for next year we can do something slick, but for now, just paste your predictions in this thread and we'll see who gets closest. I can do some quick tallying. Assume you get more points for getting the top places right and maybe order will matter, but probably not, as that's too complicated. If somebody else wants to do something more formal, awesome :)

      What is he, your cousin?

I was just saying he's had trouble finishing top 3. He's cashed a lot, granted, but just seems jinxed because he's a very good and consistent player, is all.

      I hope I'm wrong.

no i'm not related to him, at least not that i know of. but how could i not root for the schwartz?

      here are my predictions:

      9. kim
      8. montgomery
      7. marquis

    • So far nobody has any points (for the strict scoring). Damn!

I propose a new scoring system to make it more interesting...

For each place, you get points based on close the player you picked ended up to that place. For example, if you picked Kim to get 9th and he actually got 8th, the "distance" is one. If you picked Kim to win it all and he got 8th, the "distance" is 7. The larger the distance, the less points. And to make the top finished more important, those are more heavily weighted.

      • P = place (1st, 2nd, 3rd, ...)
      • D = distance

      per-place formula = (9 - D) x (10 - P)

Total points is equal to the discrete summation of that formula as P goes from 1 to 9.

I'll work up a spreadsheet in a while that will score for both the "standard" and this "nifty" method and try to update it as players go out. Weeeeee.

    • As of Schwartz getting knocked out...

      Simple Scoring

Remember, these are for guessing the exact place a person goes out. Nobody picked Schwartz for 4th, so the points stay the same...

      Crazy Scoring

This scoring method gives credit for estimating a player's finish (rather than being right on) and linearly gives more points for guessing first place.

      per-place formula = (9 - D) x (10 - P) (see previous thread posts for further discussion)

      Locked Up?

No matter who wins the WSOP, Sheila wins the "crazy" prediction method. If Demidov wins, she also wins the simple scoring. If Eastgate wins, Parag wins the simple scoring. Nice work!

    • What was the bet? Shall I bring $10 to Sheila's game next week?

Hey, Sheila, want to buy a lottery ticket with me? :>
