Captcha Omaha Hands

    • I just noticed that the captcha used to tell humans from bots on this site is four characters. Another thing that can be represented by four characters is an Omaha hand. However I've never gotten more than three actual 'cards,' (it started out well enough with AKj, but the last one was a 'g') so I can't qualify. Has anyone put together a full hand? Man, I have way too much free time...

    • ...you know, if I'd had a real hand I may not have noticed. But I'll be sure to look every time from now on. ;)

P.S. Michael Douglas and Sean Penn star in...

    • We've actually thought of doing a captcha that involved poker hands where we'd show you some options and have you pick the best hand. Problem is we'd only have space for about 4 hands, so it's a 1/4 to get it right. We could also show you a flop and 8 extra cards, then ask you to pick two to make the best hand. That's 1/28. Of course that takes up a lot more space than just the current captcha image.

    • I just picked up aq26 when I commented on Ethan's blog. I'd put out a raise with any hand that featured a2 in Omaha 8...

    • You'd really raise with any A2 in Omaha 8? I'm not sure I would... It's like raising on a draw, except this ain't no nut flush draw, son. Let me 'splain.

Three unpaired low cards (8 or lower) come out by the river about 50% of the time, if my math serves me correctly. It's been a while since I've calculated that, but I'm pretty sure it's close to right. That includes those runner-runner lows, where you might not even stick around after the flop if all you have is an A2. Don't forget that your A2 will get counterfeited about a quarter of the time that the low comes. That means you are making the nut low about 25% of the time, but 75% of the time you might be losing money on the draw or because you have two crappy pair or some other poor high hand.

Another problem is that some of the most likely callers of your raise are people holding A2! Now you are getting quartered when you make your hand :/

I've had the best luck in Omaha when I was able to figure who's going for the high and who's going for the low and then taking advantage of it. For example, if I know the guy to my left is going high and I have the nut low, I'll check, let him bet, put in small raise once everybody calls, and hope he knows what's up and re-raises a small amount to get more value into the pot. Yay!

I know you were probably just messing around, but this is an interesting thing to discuss :p

    • Dude, this is the 'general' forum... I was talking about a game against other captcha Omaha 8 hands, like the title suggests. I'm not really sure how we see the flop in this game, but I didn't think it out any farther than 'Hey, that could be an Omaha hand.' Actually I got something like 5c8d the other day, so it could be a hold 'em hand, too. But now that we're on the topic, I'd definitely like to see a flop with that hand, in Omaha 8. I've got some draws depending on suits. It isn't looking good to scoop, true, but it could go either way. Omaha is a pretty confusing game to me. Too many draws and possibilities. I usually play super tight and don't feel good about anything short of the nuts. I prefer games where two pair is a good hand to games where if the board pairs you better have the boat. Seriously, though, this is the general forum...
