Hi Folks,
First off, you've got to have "balls" (a.k.a. tough skin) to do this in a tounament online. I say that because other players on your table will be screaming and shouting the heck out of the chat window.
**This is not guareenteed to work to get you in the money every time but it is guareenteed to get you in a higher spot than you would otherwise be if you didn't do this.
Criteria for when this strategy is most beneficial:*
- Major poker tournament of any kind online.
- Halfway or more through the field. (i.e. Within 100 to 300+- players from making it into the minimum money spot)
- Semi short stack to really short stacked (or even large stack but this strategy is not as necessary if you have a big stack) and worried about if you are going to make it into the money at the least.
How To Execute This Very Easy Trick:
- Every time your receive you pocket cards, do not take any action, i.e. call, raise, and especially even fold, until the complete alotted time has been used up. (I.E. on poker stars you have about 20 seconds total). First they give you 6 seconds to reveiw your hand then they post a message in the chat window that you have 14 seconds remaining.
- Very Important: Use at least 15 to 18 of the seconds on every single hand you are dealt.
This easiest way to time it is just use this online STOP WATCH found at the following website (click the green up arrow):
http://www.online-stopwatch.com/full-screen-stopwatch/And thats its!!
If you use this strategy, the following things will occur:
Pros:
- 1. Each hand dealt will usually take up to about a 1 minute or longer because you are using up almost 20 seconds of it vs. 3 or 4 seconds due to a fold.
- 2. You will notice that the field of players will be decreasing more and more and you will be inching closer and closer to getting in the money even though you've had weak hands and have only been folding.
- 3. The longer each hand takes, you will be subject to far less blinds the longer term.
Cons:
- A. Other players at the table will get super upset and start yelling at you to play.(Thus, the need for thick skin) Some will even just decided to sit out. LOL. Don't worry about them at all, just continue to do the same thing on every hand because you are trying to safely make it into the money.
- B. You may be slowing down your opportunity to play more hands and possibly get a good hand to double up with but at the same time, you could get that same hand and be knocked out the tourney just outside of the money.
Ultimately, by taking the maximum amount of time of each and every hand that is dealt to you no matter what your action is to be, you will end up being much closer to the money than you would otherwise be if you folded yours hands and played faster pots. EVERYONE LOVES TO FOLD FAST, BUT THERE IS NOTHING WRONG OR ILLEGAL WITH FOLDING SLOW.
Once again, this is most beneficial when you are semi short stacked and and close to or potentially only a small chance to making it in the money. (i.e when you don't have too many BB's left +-15 or so). The key is fold alot and make it in the money but slow your potential knockout blow by slowing your action on EVERY HAND and the field on other tables outside of yours will start to dwindle down.
Before you know it, you will have squeezed you way into the money.
Once you have made it into the money, then it is a good idea to relive your opponents on the table of your snail play and start playing at regular speed again.
This has worked for me numerous times.
To avoid having to deal with upset and angry oppenents, I just completely turn off the chat functions for the duration of my slow play. I turn them back on once I start playing regular again. I recommend others that use this strategy to do the same.
Try it, have fun and squeeze your way in the $! And remember its 100% allowed to do this on the poker website.

I fold slow because I never know when it is my turn to act... I also seem to wait for .... " hey, Gordo... it is on you.." Ever seen my card protector?

You want to talk about donkey kong moves....
yesterday middle of the pstars guarenteed 200k tournament, I raised 4x preflop from the BB with {AK} suited and got one caller on the button. The flop was no help to me , Jack was the highest, so I could have checked or even continuation betted it. But instead, While I was trying to select the perfect amount to continue bet I let the time run out!!!! Essentially, I forgot to hit the "Request extra time button". Blinds were 500/1000 by that time so pretty much just gave away 4000 in chips to the button which reduced my stack from 17k to 13k. Safe to say, I was punching the wall. I had to rationalize it later that the guy must of had nuts anyway.
Moral of story: Taking your time in online poker is good, just don't take too long that you let the time run out with a good hand. i.e. don't be a donkey kong

By the way, I utilized the above mentioned method and I indeed cashed on that tourney. : )

lol, interesting. i would completely disagree with this, except for the disclaimer that you should only do it when you are short-stacked have little-to-no chance of making the money. if i have any shot at making the money, i want to play as many hands as possible to get as many chances to use the edge i (hope i) have on my opponents to scoop more chips.

I agree with Jason on that point. I mean, if you are average to low stacked...wouldn't slow play mean that you are getting fewer hands while the blinds continue to go up? Making your odds of being able to play better hands go down as you would be forced to push all in on a mediocre hand like say... and hope to double up? ( <-- through Mr. Hellmuth )
I wouldn't mind using the above technique if I were BIG STACKED as that would seem to increase my chances of cashing as the blinds wouldn't affect me as much as it would if I were to have a smaller stack.
I guess for me, and to Jason it seems...I like to see twice the amount of hands in order to allow myself to gradually increase my chip stack while being able to adjust to the game play at the table. I have found myself cashing in a lot more tournaments by chipping away little by little in hopes that i'll get one or two hands an hour that will pay off more so than the chipping would.

Yea, thought of that fact too that you get to see less hands and in fact I mentioned it under the list of "cons".
The above is definitely a passive way to make it into the money (no question) as oppose to aggresive. Of course there's still always the opporunity to go allin and double up or go all in and steal blinds with no callers which is most preferable.
Either,
A. Play fast, and the blinds will come around quicker which can decrease your stack, but you will have a higher potential to get good hands because you will see more cards. (assertive)
B. Play slow and the blinds come around slower which can save some of your chip stack, but you will have less potential to get a good pocket hand. (passive)Poker pros will always say A is better because you have to play to win 1st place not just cash. If you are a player who's playing for 1st place 100% of the time and not just trying to cash, then this method is definitley not the way to go. If your hoping to ensure you make in the money at a minimum, then this might be something to consider.
Darren - this does definitely work at any stack level, high medium low but i don't think big stacks necessarily needs to be so passive.
Another disclaimer: I'm by no means the best on pokersoup, or even in the top 25% so my posts are just meant to be "food for thought". I don't think everyone should subscribe to this method and do it every time or at all if they don' t want to or think its utter BS. Doesn't matter to me either way. I write too much but its okay because I'm just a ridiculously enthusiatic poker fanatic (i.e. addict)...

this is a good technique for online tourneys because A on starz there are 3k plus players thus tables are constantly changing and getting re sized so you might by playing slow be able to get moved right before your to pay the BB and becasue there are 150 tables going on even as there are only 50 players or so your waiting to get knocked out. and with the fact that alot of players subscribe to the M theory the will push all in short stacked and get knocked out even though good tourney strategy would say not to push pre with mediocre hand just because your short if your about to make it in the money thus they get called by the big stack who already feels invested or doesnt give them credit and they get sucked out on. sorry if its all over the place dont have time to proof read it.

Good points BAB on the difference of goals. I can see if your goal is to sneak into the money (and therefore ride the lower-variance train), I can dig it for sure.
