Preflop Raises

    • This might be common knowledge to all, but at the beginning of this year, I learned from a very profitable player not to change the size of your preflop raises based on the strength of my hand.
Essentially, when that is done, it gives away too much information. As a result, my game has gotten much better and I have been able to take down more pots after the flop as oppose to before the flop and just collecting blinds. Also, I hate top-5-hands-preflop-slow-play with a passion therefore I try not to ever do it; unless i'm in front of (or behind) an absolute walrus on the table which is pretty rare to my standards.

      i just like this pic

    • GTO vs exploitable strategy... use GTO when your exploitable strategy is exploited, but until then, GTO is often not optimal

    • gto = game theoretically optimal

i make the standard raise no matter my hand when i'm playing with people that i know will pay attention. however, my standard raise is not 2.5 or 3 times the big blind. it is based on how much is in the pot. for example, if 3 people limp in, i'm not going to raise it to 3 times the big blind (because they will all call).

when i play in games where people don't pay attention to that, i try to raise the exact amount that is just enough to accomplish what i want. for example, if i'm stealing the blinds with junk, i might try 3 times the big blind, but if i get pocket aces and want to steal the blinds, i'll raise 6 times the big blind. when people only play based on their cards, they will call 3x and 6x virtually the same, so i prefer to get more money in when i have a great hand and put just enough money in when i have a questionable hand.
