What do you do as a tourny director here?

    • Blinds are 1200-2400 guy utg makes it 6000 to go. Guy in late position says "raised" and puts out 4800. Now my question here is how do you interpet this since he used the word in past tense, ie is he talking to himself saying the guy raised and he didn't put enough out meaning to call, or is he raising cause he didn't see the action in front of him. What if he agrues either way? Is it a call in your mind or do you say he can still raise? Give me your thoughts. This happened at the Stable last night and I had never seen that before.

    • I would give the guy in late position 2 options:

Complete the raise to 9,600 (the prior person had raised 3,600 on top of 2,400), or
Fold with his 4800 in the pot.

That's being kind. Technically, he should only have the first option (complete the raise).

He cannot call. He cannot pull his money back. He cannot raise it more than 9600. It is obvious that he wasn't paying attention and thought he was the first in the pot with his min raise. For him to argue otherwise is, well...

      You know what I'm saying.

If he said nothing, you might have invoked cash game rules and allowed him to pull his money back if there had been no action after him. (I don't allow this at my games, dead money is dead money, no backtalk). Or he could call, but not raise.

"Raised." Without any other qualifying words (such as "Oh, he raised, damn." or "Who raised?") is a raise. Compounded by the fact that he put out 4800, which is exactly a min raise of the bb. The fact pattern makes me think that he just wasn't paying attention and, when he realized he made a mistake, he was likely trying to weasel out of it.

That being said, I wasn't there (and I haven't heard about this hand from other sources) but if you allowed him to complete to just a call, not giving the initial raiser an opportunity to re-raise and protect his (possibly to likely) better hand, and the guy called (because he had so much dead money already) and sucked out with a lower quality hand, the initial raiser would have a valid reason to be seriously pissed off at you.

      So, what happened?

    • lol @ raised....

I think he meant to raise and didn't see the initial raise. Whatever Alexis mentioned, I think is the right way to do it. but, since this is a house game and im assuming lots of alcohol was involved...I would give the person another chance to just call the 6000 or let him raise it to an amount he wants to or fold!

but then again i am not a tourny director and don't really host games :-p

    • I agree with alexis. They decided to take the money back. I don't get involved in hands where I am not in unless the players argue about what to do during our games, unless the player is making an obvious angle shoot or something to that effect.

      I agree with alexis.

Alexis is a really good tournament director and keeps everyone in check... :)

    • It was a very very strange thing. Tony did a very nice thing and allowed him to call.

I do agree with Tony's ruling in this situation.

      no harm no foul

    • The other consideration here is the guy was a newb to poker. (he ended up winning it lol) so I don't like to punish new players for a first time rookie mistake in a home game. Ya never want to drive the fish away.

    • raised to me sounds more like a question
he was probablly a limit player

    • So who is going to say it? Tony, Gordo or I?

    • avatar for FREMONTkyle
    • well since you already made a comment i know for sure its gunna be tony
but ill tell you what next time i come to town ME & U or GORDO can play heads up and either of you can help fund the kyle needs a poker book fund.
reality is i cant really say much about tony given his track record and accomplishments plus his bankroll
though it would be fun to play with him but i dont have the bankroll to play high enough stakes of which it would mean anything too him
but as far as anyone else im not really concerned
aside from that FORGET THE redundant themes in all the poker books

    • I'm not sure what I would do. I agree it sounds like he was trying to raise. I'd probably make him do a min-raise. But I like your reason for being nice, T :)
