Lucky Chances Tonight (Tuesday)

    • I think the problem is jason you have a tendency of trying to outplay people too much in cash games esspesially ones at casinos that are the level your playing at its probablly better to only occasionally try and outplay other players once you know for sure there capable of folding. just play the math call when getting right odds on flush draws and other hands but aside from that treat it like its a 25/50 cent online game or even 10/25 cent because as you realise majoritiy of the time after your session there are just certain players that aren't capable of laying down a hand.

    • Kyle, you are definitely correct. :/ That's the part that makes poker fun, right? Heh. I'll keep that in mind when I start up again. Thanks for the comments.

    • Yes, some players cannot find the fold button.
I was trying a lot of aggressive moves only to find out they will call me down.

Another thing I notice is that these weak tight players fold when there is a threat to their stack.
I used to bluff the river but because they get to see how down they will call.
So I bluff the turn now instead to put more threat into the bluff.
Of course I should bet my huge hands also on turn instead of going for value on the river.

    • Alexis - nice win in Garden City.
Is it is a 1/1/2 game or 2/5 game?
I was there once to play Omaha but left unable to get a seat.

Do you always buyin full stack?
I prefer to buy in short because majority of players are short.

    • avatar for Jason M
    • Do you prefer to buy in short in those circumstances to remove any "short stack advantage"? Expound on that, please? :)

    • I buy in full stack - $100. I played 3-100 again today. Took forever, but cashed out with $550 on a single $100 buy-in. I only had pocket pairs 3 times in a little under FIVE HOURS.

One hand was kinda humorous. Young turk sits down to my right and he waits a full revolution of the table before posting (you have to post at GC, unlike LC). I have K5o UTG and I limp in. Family pot.

Flop comes K5Q. Sweet. The young turk bets out $12. I raise to $42. Action folds to young turk who goes all in ($80 or something, probably all the money he had in his pocket when he arrived). I call.

I flip over my 2 pair....

So does he. He has KQ. He trapped the trapper. Nice.

Turn comes a duece and then....

Yep. 5 on the river. The young turk (he looks all of twelve) crumples in his seat and lays his head down on the table with his arms folded over him. I take my stack back and push his stack back at him. I say, "I don't want it." I have my headset on so I can't hear the talk and I ignore him so he accepts the gift. I was happy to be even money on that hand.

The kid doubles up through our table fish a couple hands later and is one happy camper. I take out a new arrival for his full stack on his first hand (I raise to $11 with AA, the only time I got them - he re-raises with QQ to $25 - I re-raise him all in to $100. I win).

Overall, I ran the table. I like that. Pots were small and managable until something big hit and I was able to trap everyone at least once (and one really dumb guy twice). Best of all, I only made one bad call all day. That's unheard of for me.

Anyway... At GC the MOST you can buy in is for $100, and it really doesn't work to play short stack there. If they changed the rule and let you buy in for more, I would. Having a big stack helps a ton to get the good players off their draws.

    • Wow - thats winning three sessions in a row!
You must be doing something right.

It is very nice of you to give his stack back.
I hope there is "poker karma" in this world.

What are the blinds in 3-100 game?

Buying in big stack (>=200 in 1/1/2) will put you in weird situations when there are 1 or 2 big stacks.
The short stacks will be protected when the big stacks tangle on the side pots.
Even preflop you will be put in tough situations.

      Example:
      1/1/2 game
your nemesis big stack (stack 200) raises from mid position to 10.
You are on button (stack 200) (with 89 of hearts (or a small pair).
You want to stack him and you call.
The SB (stack 100) calls getting great odds.
The BB (stack 40) goes all in.
Big blind calls making pot 60.
You have to fold for two reasons -
      SB might raise to 100.
You are no longer getting implied odds to stack your target.
The short stacks behind you can cause lot of problems and you will have to fold a lot of preflop hands.

You might argue that you will play only premium hands just like short stackers.
But you need to play few races when there are short stackers.
And having small stack gives you protection and lets you see all five cards.
With shorter stack you protect the rest of the stack against medium-large stack bluffs.
Also it reduces your variance because you get more 'shots' with speculative hands like AQ, AK.

      Example:
      You have 80-100.
Middle position (50) raises to 15 , button calls (200) and you are in SB. You can push all in now.
If you have big stack and another big stack is still behind you cannot profitably push the hands that you need to.
You might lost your stack if button has AA but you lose only 100 and get another shot to try this.
If you catch the A or K you will triple up.
Your AQ and AK now have chance to see all five cards and triple up against 2 people playing AT and 99.

I play big stack but I make sure there are 0 or only 1 short stacker on the table.(online)
Live I start out with 50BB which is plenty.

    • Interesting. Thanks for the explanation and examples. I think I can be persuaded to agree with some more thinking and conversation :)

    • Blinds are 1/2/3, $3 to open. The table dynamic is SIGNIFICANTLY different than LC as the only way to become a big stack at GC is to earn it. When I have 3 stacks in front of me, I get a lot of respect. I typically cash out at 3-5 stacks, but one time I had 14 stacks in front of me and I purposely tried to isolate the mid-stack guys - get them in a pot and put in a $100 bet on the turn. Since they have another couple stacks behind, they will fold most of the time.

But, yeah, I'm always thinking of stacks. I get out quickly if I sense action behind is going to get out of hand. But my main goal is to fleece the big stack. Short stacks will gamble and I'm fine with taking their money, but I derive an inordinate amount of pleasure taking down a couple stacks off of some hot shot. I usually only do it once a session, but it is oh, so, sweet.

Since I've been wearing a headset and ignoring table chatter (and, NOT TALKING), I've seemed to do a lot better. I talk my hand too much. I don't do that with my headset on. I've opened up the range of hands I'll limp in with too. The combination, so far, has worked well.

I know you do mostly online play now, but I hope to meet you at the tables some day.

    • Nice post about the dynamic.

I would try to play there some time.
Yes - it would be good to sit at a table where it is tough to build a big stack.

    • Not that I want my competitors to get better, but I agree you should keep that headset on ;)

    • id love to get a chance to sit down and talk poker strategy with a group of you one day though i have a tndency to occasionally disagree with you guys i like the overall discussions and the fact that there are formulated reasoning behind it all.

    • let's do that on wednesday then. haha.

I'm thinking I'll go and hang out for a bit to say bye to some ppl but I don't know if I'll play because I want to use some of the money for other stuff and I have to pick my tourneys wisely. I never cash at your game, you know this, so I'm hesitant to donate.

      Ttys
